Tiling Preparation

A good tiling job is dependent upon a good substrate and well prepared surface. This will ensure a long lasting and problem free installation.

Before tiling starts surfaces may need to be primed, waterproofed, leveled or shower bases may need to be formed. Every job is different and will require different types of preparation.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing prevents water and moisture from leaking below the tile installation to where it could cause water damage to your property. Most commonly you will find waterproofing membranes associated with bathrooms, laundries, and wet areas.

Joins are filled with silicone and bandaged to create a strong waterproof barrier, then the entire area to be tiled is coated twice in a waterproof membrane. Once dry the area is completely waterproof and ready for tiling.

Waterproofing is a building code requirement in New Zealand, as a certified waterproofing installer, I can help you make the right decisions with regard to the installation and the use of correct waterproofing products. It is essential the waterproofing is completed correctly for a long-lasting and trouble free job.

Tiling

Once the substrate is prepared and the tile layout has been decided, the tiles are laid with adhesive compatible with the waterproofing, substrates, and tiles.

This video shows a custom shower base being tiled.

Grouting

Grouting tiles pushes a cementitious compound between the tile gaps reducing the amount of water that makes it's way below the tiles while providing the finishing aesthetic touch.
Correctly applying and cleaning the grout will avoid grout cracking or discoloring. Some tiles may need sealing before grouting to avoid damage to the surface of the tile.

Grout sealed and Joins Siliconed

Sealers are used to lock out moisture and prevent staining of porous materials such as grout, natural stone, terra-cotta and unglazed tiles. They can also be used to enhance the tiles colour.
The internal joint between two tiled substrates is then siliconed, allowing for movement.
